Crypt of the Necrodancer is a very original, funny and well done roguelike. Not Nethack or drink or anything remotely like it so those looking for something "serious" should look on the other side. This is a title for everyone, it takes a particular foundational basis for creating something difficult but accessible at the same time the original. An elegant design, some simple graphics but full of personality, a great soundtrack and a ton of options make it a generous game, which always offers more and is difficult unstuck.

In general, the mechanics are fun and design is always careful to look like the deaths have been our mistakes, leaving us wanting to try again. In addition, the title has the virtue of being extremely varied and leave many options open. We can for example play against enemies and bosses individual pleasure to polish our skills. We also have an extensive list of characters to unlock, offering completely different playing styles.

  • Lots of options, variations and possibilities
  • The possibility of incorporating our own music

  • Surely a veteran player does not like roguelikes

Follow the rhythm and fight your way while you dance!

Crypt of the Necrodancer is a 2D action RPG videogame that uses music as its base to create an innovative combat system based on rhythm. Basically you have to follow the music track and move along with the beat in order to perform actions properly, otherwise you will trip and lose momentum, being vulnerable to enemy attacks. The game features rogue-like mechanics such as different dungeons that you will have to clear to progress, but those will reset if you die, no checkpoints here.

Inside the dungeons there are different floors with different music, so when you thought you got the rhythm right, the music will change drastically. You can make use of different tools to make your way through the floors by eliminating rock tiles and getting better weapons if you find the hidden store or even special chests. After you clear all floors, a funky boss will be waiting for you, always with some cool arcade attack patterns that you will have to learn in order to beat it.

  • Your body will start moving by itself with the sick beats
  • Wide array of items and characters with unique abilities

  • Sometimes you don´t stand a chance against all those enemies onscreen

Crypt of the NecroDancer is an indie video game developed and published by Brace Yourself Games. It can be sorted into the roguelike dungeon category, but it adds a new feature which is what makes this game unique and special: it is also a beat-matching rhythm adventure. You will have to pay attention to the soundtrack because the beats of the music, along with the beats of a heart, are what mark the steps you will have to take.

Of course, the soundtrack of this adventure is very important, so the developers have relied on Danny Baranowsky, the famous composer of other indie games' soundtracks. Within his works, you can find Super Meat Boy, The Binding of Isaac and Canabalt, all of them successful indie adventures. You will have the option to import your own music when playing, and the gameplay will adapt to the beats of your music. However, once you download the Crypt of the NecroDancer and listen to the marvelous work of Baranowsky, introducing a different soundtrack will seem like a sacrilege for you.

Everything is focused on rhythm, including the enemies, whose pattern must be learnt to be able to do something more than die time and time and again. You will have to use the keyboard by following the beats of the music. You will have to press the keys to move the character, to attack, to use items, to call on magic or simply to pay the singing storekeeper of each level.

As mentioned, following the rhythm is the most important key in this game. If you lose the beat, you will not deplete your lives but the scoring multiplier. The scoring multiplier increases when you don't miss any step of the music and with the score you will get more coins. The coins serve to buy items that help you in your path and that increases your possibilities of reaching the end of the levels. You will start just with a dagger, but as you gain coins, you will get more powerful weapons such as blunderbusses or rifles. Apart from items you can purchase in the dungeons, there are permanent enhancements for your character. You can purchase these enhancements with diamonds that are scattered in the levels.

It can be sorted into the roguelike dungeon category, but it adds a new feature that is what makes this game unique and special: it is also a beat-matching rhythm adventure

The protagonist of this adventure is Cadence, a girl whose heart has been stolen by the NecroDancer. In order to retrieve it, she must face hordes of terrifying creatures that are possessed by the rhythm of the music. However, you are free to use other characters, with different skills along your adventure. These characters are Monk, Bard, Aria, and Bold, each one with its own items, number of lives and skills.

As you complete levels, you will fight many creatures that will be difficult to defeat, but they are nothing more than minions; the final bosses are the ones you must fear. Each boss will be more complex than the previous one, and of course, you must beat them by finding their patterns according to the music. This way, you will have to face bosses such as the evil King Conga, the dreadful Death Metal (who looks like the reaper, with scythe included) or the Deep Blues (a chessboard as creepy as McGonagall's) before you face the hideous NecroDancer.
